I don't know if you are in the US or not. If you are not the rules may be different. But in the US medical records are very private. No one can find out about it unless you tell them. Also anxiety is very common and is not some kind of horrible mental disorder. The only problem for you that I can see is that if you were treated with meds you may not be able to get into the military as they are allowed to check for that, but that isn't your goal anyways. I don't think you will have any problems doing what ever you would like to!

You can be anything as long as you have overcome your anxiety. As long as you get the degree and everything you should be fine. Millions of people have anxiety today. The number of people taking anxiety medicine is growing so it is not something that would hold you back in the workplace.

I don't know what kind of bad time you're having that you have anxiety attacks and depressed. You mentioned you've seen a professional and was that she told you? How many times have you seen her? Did she counsel you or talk to you about the root of your situation. A good professional should counsel you and if you're still having anxiety attacks tell you to see your doctor in case you need some meds.

Drugs can work, but better if you can cope without. I take Clonzapam for anxiety on occassion, but understand it can become addictive.

Sitting down to relax has never really helped me. As long as I don't feel like I'm dying (which is a particularly nasty attack), it often helps if I do something really physical and mindless. Now is not the time to pay bills or figure out where to put everything away....try raking, scrubbing the floor, playing fetch with the dog, chase the cat, take down the curtains and wash them etc. Something that will make you feel good afterward that really just needs your body and not your brain and then throw yourself into it. The problem with depression is that it's hard to get started, if you can get over that hump..it'll ease the anxiety.
Writing down things that I'm anxious about helps me sometimes as long as it's not a two page day. Most of the time, I can laugh at some of the stuff and some of the stuff I can solve.
Last, don't use any alchohol and see if that helps. It causes me anxiety the day after I drink.

Well, talking with someone other than a pro. helps also.. get someone to be a "sounding board" you know, to yak at... people dno't have enough other people to let out their feelings and pent-up frustrations with...and that's sad... Someone you can "let your hair down with" and not have to worry about anything...now, wouldn't that be nice? :) Mr. Diamond

The only thing that helped me was counseling, antidepressants, and the best friend in the world to talk to.
The relaxing and "happy thoughts" didn't do anything except make me angry at myself because I thought I was doing it wrong.
Try to find another professional. i had to fire one psychiatrist because he told me what my problems were instead of asking me what was bothering me.

You may wish to try guided imagery. A particularly good title is Panic Attacks by Belleruth Naparstek. This highly acclaimed, research-proven, physician-endorsed guided imagery combines healing imagery, powerful music and a state-of-the-art understanding of the mind-body connection to reduce or eliminate acute anxiety and panic attacks. Check it out: http://www.wellbaskets.com/paatguimcdby.html

I had these symptoms and thought it was mental... turned out to be a heart murmur triggering the breathing problems, which triggered the panic attacks. Also, I found out I had Asthma, which was causing hyperventilation that I also thought was emotional. Go to a Pulmonary doctor, or a good General MD, and get a thorough heart and blood workup.
Since being on Asthma meds, I have no more heart racing, and am much calmer, with more energy... my body was just not getting enough oxygen. It was that simple!

I have had anxiety/panic since '91, I have learned breathing slow deep breathes, breathing up to where your stomach comes out slowly then let it out........also I have used cold wash clothes, ice on my temples, saying The Lords Prayer over and over, a lose rubber band on your wrist snapping it, thinking of calm places you have been or would like to be, chewing or sucking on ice.......I know they are terrible I have tried a lot of things over the years. Counseling is also great.........Seeing a Psychiatrist also.....

You need to first understand what seems to be causing the anxiety attack. As Yoda would say, it is your fear you must control;) But, on a serious note most meditation and other calming excercises are about controlling your mind from racing. So, take a slow deep breath and exhale through your mouth slowly. This will actually reduce your heart rate. Then breathe normal. Think pleasant thoughts or go through multiplication tables or name capitols of states something that will force your mind to concentrate on something. A lot of times I just sing a favorite song in my head. Meanwhile take deep slow breath now and then.

Try this before you go to sleep.

Try using a relaxation technique. The one I use focuses on relaxing your entire body, one part at a time.IFirst I lie down (you can do this while sitting too). I start at my toes and I tell them to relax; I consciously release the tension from the them. Next I move to my entire foot, then my ankles, and so forth until I've relaxed every part of my body. It helps to exhale every time I release tension.

Hope this helps.

See anxiety and panic attack treatments at http://www.ezy-build.net. (.net.nz/~shaneris) on pages 6 and 8, and practise the word/phrase repetition technique daily, and when needed, since it can be used anywhere, and in conjunction with the controlled breathing methods, with sufficient practise.

Try essential oils. The quality ones contain no solvents, chemicals or other additives that can cause side effects or damage your liver.

Young Living makes oils called "Peace & Calming", "Frankincense" and "Valor". Inhale the "Peace & Calming" and Frankincense" and apply "Valor" on the back of your neck. "Peace & Calming" promotes relaxation & a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being. It reduces anxiety. "Frankincense" emotionally and spiritually balances you. "Valor" instills courage, confidence, and self-esteem.

After using the oils for a while, your brain and body learn what it feels like to be centered and balanced. You'll be able to find this state even without the oils. I've used the oils above so I personally know that they work.

I have struggled with this disorder for just over a year now and I have to say I am much better now than I was back then. I was determined to try to overcome it without medication (just a personal choice)..I have only had to take Ativan on time during and extremely bad panic attack. For a long time I avoided all of my anixety provoking situations. It helped at the time, however it actually ended up making the situation worse. I would definitely recommend not avoiding anxiety provoking situations if you can...exposure is one of the best ways to work through your anxiety.

I see a private therpaist every few weeks and I was also lucky enought to attend a group therapy program. It was the best experience I've had and it made me feel normal being with other people who shared my problem. We learned a lot of techniques in that class. I have found trying to decrease your general stress level helps...whether it be through exercise, yoga or meditation. Muscle relaxation helps a lot too...if you can find a great cd i would recommend it. I also tend to carry a stress ball around with me when I am out and I find that listening to music helps me keep my mind off of things.
Try making small steps forward...if you try to do something that is a 10 on a scale on 1 to 10 for anxiety provoking situations you are most likely setting yourself up for disaster. Instead set up small achievable goal every week for yourself. It also helps to examine your thought process...we all like to think that the anxiety comes from nowhere but when you sit down and really think about it...we all have a lot of negative thoughts and catstrophic thinking. Need to challenge those thoughts....when I am out and getting anxious I tell myself over and over that I am fine and even if I start panicking I will survive and be fine. Good luck and stay positive!!

I'm glad I found this! I have had a panic/anxiety disorder for 2 years now and still can't always control my attacks. I do know two things:
1) Talking to someone about anything makes a good distraction helps me calm down.
2) Taking my anxiety pills works great, but I end up sleeping for 2 hours after I take it.

I think it depends on the cause(s) of your anxiety. they can be situational, environmental, or chemical.

For example, are you just in a stressful or anxiety producing situation (say public speaking or having to face a phobia, dentist, hospital stay, etc), relaxtion techniques like deep breathing, aromatheraphy (mint cream - like fromBath and Body Works - rubbed into the wrists and temples) , etc might help.

If you have an allergic like reaction that contributes to the problem (food additives like Sodium Lactate can cause panic attacks); you have to avoid the anixiety stimulant.
(If my dentist gives me Novacaine - with epinephrine(sp) - my heart POUNDS and Races and I get a HUGE panic attack!)

But there are many people who have chemical imbalances or genetic predisposition to anxiety and panic.

In my many years of experiencing and investigating techniques, I have tried MANY things including hypnosis, mediation, deep breathing, aromatherapy, and a WIDE variety of medications.
For the very short term - Xanax is one of the most effective because it acts quickly - but doctors fear people getting addicted. I take a small dose and get extremely drowsy if I take more than I REALLY need. In my mom's case she takes a small dose every morning - hey to the doctors who moan - whould you deny a diabetic their insulin or medicine to a heart patient? But Xanax has a short "half-life" menaing that it does not keep up it's effect for long periods of time - as opposed to the kinds of meds you take once every 24 hours, etc.

Also recently I've taken Lexapro and Anafranil.

Odd that Ativan is a "regular" rx for a previous poster. My periodontist uses that to make me OUT of IT duing gum/oral surgery.

Best book I've ever found is by Dr. David Sheehan "The Anxiety Disease"

All the best !!

Walking everyday. Long walks. Even when your right in the middle of that bad anxiety and don't know what to do and nothing seems to help. It has helped me a great deal.

Take care and don't give up!

I take klonopin and xanax prescribed by doctor. I was on Paxil but too many sexual side effects for me. I am reading some self help books on dealing with anxiety. I got from the library. It is really comforting to me to read about other people's experiences with anxiety and to just understand it better. The more I learn about it the easier it is for me to deal with the anxiety and panic attacks I am feeling.

The trick is to stop fighting the feeling, strange but so true.
Humans have an inbuilt response to stress called the fight flight syndrome. What it means is in times of pressure, stress or danger our bodies will release adrenalin and we will either fight, or flee. Since you cannot fight or flee feelings of anxiety there is no way to get rid of that excess adrenalin your body has made in response to stress and so your heart races and the walls close in.
I found the best way to deal with it is to face your fear, you take control back and allow yourself to feel the stress. Don't try to suppress it or run from it, doing so gives it more power because you are fearing the feeling and therefore bringing the feeling upon yourself.
Sit down, tell yourself that if your going to have a panic attack then bloody well have one cause your ready, its your body, your mind and you are not going to run anymore!
trust me, every time you do this you are regaining control and putting the power back in your hands.

When I had panic attacks, it got to the point where i was so worried about having one that I'd have one! In the end I got sick of trying to hide the fact that I had lost control so I decided to tell everyone what was happening to me, and to my suprise, most people could relate to my feelings in one way or another. Ok so now its no longer a secret I have nothing to hide! So on my couch Id sit and try and try to bring on an attack, I couldnt! yippee!! Then when out of the blue i'd have one instead of trying to calm down I'd say, "oh well, go on then, do your stuff" and accept that it was happening, once I accepted it, it went away!
Strange old brains we have ey?

I carry a flask.

(It is not recommended.)

If people wanna criticize my method, be my guest, but I'm 26 and have never been on a date. Anxiety? I have it. Vicious cycle? I'm in it. I'm fortunate to have not drank myself to death yet.

antidepressants help reduce anxiety. They are preferable to anxiety drugs that you take when anxiety occurs. Antidepressants can help prevent as well as reduce the seriousness of anxiety.

Buspar helps some people. Avoid benzos: ativan, xanax, valium, klonopin. They are addictive and can cause memory problems and aggressive behavior. They are chemically related to lunesta and ambien, which also cause these problems.

I have bipolar disorder quite severely, so I have a social worker, and she has said that generally anxiety disorders respond much better to counseling than meds. So it sounds to me like you're going down the wrong road. get some books on anxiety and do the homework. Lucinda Bassett has a program that many people like, it is expensive, but maybe it is available thru your library.

Try Byron Katie's "The Work" - she's on youtube. This is a great dialogue to help clarify why you are getting angry.

Read Patrick Holford's Low GL diet - it sounds like you could have a blood sugar imbalance - this can lead to irritability, mood swings, depression, aggressive outbursts, crying spells, chronic fatigue, excessive thirst, cravings for sweets or stimulants, drowsiness after meals. I used to have constant anxiety and since using this diet, I have felt calm, dropped any weight, feel great and have real energy again. It might be worth considering.

For the natural sedative, I tried Kalms, (Or any valerian based product) and they did work well just to take the edge off the irrititability.

Stay away from herbal supplements. These problems come from your mind and have to be defeated in your mind. Try techniques like meditation, yoga and visualization they will work better than any herb

this blog http://www.anxiouscandy.com also has great tips for defeating stress and anxiety

5htp - take 50-100mg last thing at night. This increases serotonin levels in the brain.

L-Theanine - an amino acid - good for an immediate calming effect, but I have read that it lowers serotonin levels in the brain, so don't take it long term and don't bother taking it with the 5htp or neither of them will work properly. Just experiment with both of them separately then stick with the one that you liked most. If you're prone to depression, then stick to the 5htp. Anger and irritability can be a symptom of depression.

Passiflora - a herbal remedy - take one capsule in the morning and one at night.

A combined magnesium/calcium supplement - acts as a natural sedative without causing tiredness.

The vitaimin B complex - essential for effective nervous system functioning.

Cut out ALL caffeine - even in tea - buy decaf or drink herbal/fruit teas.

I do all of the above and have found that my mood, anxiety, irritability and anger has diminished by about 80%.

Valerian also has a sedative effect - take at night, but it can cause tiredness the next day. Only take it once in a while if you're really stressed and need a good nights sleep.

Hope you feel better soon.

Follow these suggestions

1 read the book 7 weeks to emotional healing and follow the suggestions for anger, anxiety etc. Take the tests as well.

They have the nutritional, behavioral and medical treatments for several categories including anger and anxiety and more.

2 Also read change your brain, change your life..it had a lot of practical suggestions and nutritional ones as well

3 Also take at least 3000-5000 mg of fish oil.

A book I read said that this changes one's brain and has been verified by pet scans for a wide variety of mental illnesses and emotions including schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, add, dyslexia, agoraphobia etc..

In addition to the fish oil caps, also up your intake of omega three fats in food as we have many times too much omega six fatty acids when they should be in balance..this imbalance causes too many neurotransmitters to build up in the synaptic gap of the brain due to hardening of the neurotransmitter receptor sites, and this causes chemical imblances which affect our brain and our emotions.

Omega three fats are found in cold water fatty fish both fresh and canned such as salmon (do not use farm raised only wild caught), mackerel, herring and sardines...these have several times more omega three fats than tuna but nearly all seafoods have some. Land sources are hard to come by and include flax seeds, flax seed oil, purslane and raw walnuts.

4 check earl mindells vitamin bible for the amino acids that help these problems or take a comprehensive protein shake supplement to be sure you are getting all the amino acids you needs as these can and do affect emotions.

5 finally, check out back flower essences..these have very specific uses for a wide variety of personality types and emotions and are said to change the vibrational frequency and eventually as issue from the past come to mind help a person completely chance long standing habits.

Get a good book to explain which essences help which personality traits and problems...they can be very specific and several will likely fit you..pick a few of the ones that resonate most that you want to change and work on those first..then as they resolve, tackle a few more.

6 as far as herbs ofhelp, for anxiety a good herbal is organic kava kava in tincture form not capsules. Another to be taken at bedtime is organic valerian tincture. also try rescue remedy for stress and crisis moments.

7 Also take melatonin and sniff lavender essential oil at bedtime and smell the lavender essential oil whenever you feel stressed.. The melatonin and lavender will give you deeper level of sleep and this may help your disposition. Take about 3-5 mg of melatonin 1/2 hour before you want to sleep.

For a long term solution of this and nearly every health problem, people who go to vegan diets tend to find they are more peaceful and happy I heard..people who have been raw food faddists I have heard can experience a complete change of personality and disposition for the better.

Lack of B vitamins is a good reason why you can feel that way.

Handling any other deficiencies will work too. Go to a nutritionist who can test you out for what you need.

Try this product Goji-juice from my personal website that I use to distribute Freelife products. I have had amazing results from that and also the DailyEdge multivitamin which is like a health food store in a bottle. I instantly felt better the next day, and my anger has subsided significantly (no more fights with the wifey). I don't do this to make money, just to distribute these really good products to friends, family, and others. They are of exceptional quality!

I heard of several good remedies in which I too am experimenting with.
The amino acids L-Theanine, Gutamine, and GABA. B complex is good for the brain and energy.
I've been reading alot about Rhodiola Rosea as an ant-depressant. Supposed to build serotonin and other neuro-transmitters. Under one site that I was looking at it mentioned Amoryn. It contains hyperum (the ingredient in St. Johns Wort that helps depression) 5 HTP, Rhodiola, and a few other good ingredients. For sleep without the next morning grogginess, Valerian, Kava Kava and Chamomile, also magnesium works good. Also research homeoapathy and essential oils like Lavendar. A bath of epsom salt, baking soda and lavendar is supposed to be very relaxing.
I found that diet is a huge factor in your moods. I started cutting out sugar and bad carbs and that made a big difference in the way I feel and I have more energy. Also I read that we eat too much wheat and other grains in this country and many people have food allergies and or sensitivities to them which can cause depression and irritability. Also dairy can be a problem for many. We need more fruits and vegetables and good protein instead.
I hope you find what works.

You could be hyperthyroid. Use Nux Vomica 30 three times a day until the tantrum is in control. Use Iodium 1M one dose in 15 days (one dose is just one globule) incase hyperthyroidsm is detected. Check the highest portion of the palm right under thumb on both hands. They would be painful. Put pressure on the area of pain for two minutes each day. The day when the pain vanishes, the anger will also be under control and the forehead will feel cool. with best wishes.

Are you getting enough calcium and magnesium in your diet?? Without sufficient calcium you will suffer insomnia, headaches and migraines, irritability and moodiness, achy bones, digestive upsets such as bloating and cramping and constipation, nasty mood swings ......... calcium is essential for healthy bones, teeth and heart health and neural functioning and works in tandem with magnesium (known as the antistress mineral)...... lack of magnesium will give you migraines and headaches, nervous and twitching and muscular issues and will also cause lower back aches and bad digestion ....... increasing your daily intake of foods rich in both such as leafy and green vegies, brocolli, kale, spinach, celery, buk choy, fresh fish such as tuna and salmon and organic nuts and seeds such as almonds, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds will all dramatically reduce your irritability and moodiness and stress levels.

Eat more green vegies mate, another thing they'll do is encourage the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy and help resolve any issues you may have with constipation and bloating........ leafy green and salad vegies is the way to go ...... rich in the living enzymes every cell in your body needs to work properly..... and don't require vitamin leaching cooking either.

A little extra effort sure but anything worth having is worth the extra effort ..... cheap too .... i reckon calmness and peace of mind is worth a few bowls of green vegies a day.

oh, the things that will rip the calcium and magnesium right out of your bones are a diet high in processed sugar, processed salt, animal protein, saturated fat, caffeine, sodas, pop and soft drinks and alcohol..... they all raise the uric acid levels in your blood stream thus prompting your body to leach calcium and magnesium minerals from your bones to try and neutralise it.

drink more water too and hydrate yourself properly...... the happiest body will always be the one that is well hydrated.

peace baby

Hello,

Your condition is not peculiar to you alone...but you're in luck!

I found this really great FREE ebook about anxiety and panic attacks (go grab your copy while it's still free as I do not know how

much longer it will remain so).

Ask your doctor for some beta-blockers like Inderal or something. A lot of performers take these just before they go on stage. It calms the nervous system and stops the shaking, and feeling hot and sweaty. Only take these at times where you REALLY need it, where you know you will be really nervous. Don't get used to taking them because they will effect your metabolism, so a once-off will work really well for you. One contraindication is if you have bad asthma or breathing problems, as it can make these worse so tell you doc if you have this. Also, as this medication slows your heart rate, make sure you don't have a low pulse rate or get dizzy often, apart from these u should be fine

You would not be normal if you did not have some anxiety about appearing in front of a audience. We all fear "rejection".
Someone above said tell a joke to "break the ice", and develop a relaxed atmosphere is the best way to go. I agree.
Just be the outrageous person you are, I am sure they will like you. and for goodness sake don't be "scared to death", or you will create that negative for yourself. It is really going to be a lot of fun.

I think what always work is to know your subject really well, then you become confident and cool. Also start the presentation with a joke...that will put you in connection with your public. Its the strategy I use when I have presentations on my research project at university and it works ! good luck

prepare, prepare, prepare

say your speech/presentation over and over until you could do it in your sleep

record yourself and listen to it, then watch yourself in the mirror as you say it...

as far as getting red or stuttery, i feel your pain- i hate to look nervous too, but if you just really, really feel prepared then you will be able to move through the presentation without having to think about it

oh- and one more thing: make sure you prepare an ending to your presentation. have a closing remark ready that you like and are comfortable with, and when you come to the end STOP and sit down.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...you're perfectly normal.

1 - Remember that just about everyone else is just as nervous as you.

2 - When you're up there, picture everyone in the room naked on toilets. Sure as hell makes everyone seem less scary. Just don't giggle. :)

3 - Practice the hell out of your presentation. Practice until you barely even have to look at your index cards. It'll make it that much easier.

4 - Take your time. Remember to breath. Deeeeeeep breaths. It'll relax you.

Just remember that no one out there is looking for your mistakes and you'll be fine. Best of luck!
